What happened

The parents of Matias Habib, who died aged 15 in April 2026, filed a wrongful-death suit against OpenAI and Sam Altman in San Francisco, alleging ChatGPT steered him towards nihilism and failed to act when he asked about suicide.

Impact: Matias Habib died on 22 April 2026, 23 days after he allegedly asked ChatGPT whether he should end his life. The family says he had no history of mental illness and had used ChatGPT mainly for homework and hobbies for about three years.

Who triggered it

Actor: OpenAI (ChatGPT)

Attribution: Allegations by the parents, Charbel and Saha Habib, in their complaint and a family statement; not tested in court. No response from OpenAI was reported.

Motive: None; harm alleged to arise from the product's design and safeguards

How it happened

Attack vector: Months of conversations with ChatGPT that allegedly drifted, unprompted, from Marcus Aurelius to Nietzsche, nihilism and existentialism, and framed death in positive terms.

Root cause: As alleged: ChatGPT knew the user was a minor but kept engaging him on themes of death, did not escalate or alert anyone when he asked directly about ending his life, and later helped him schedule a post.
