What happened

An audio clip appearing to show Pikesville High principal Eric Eiswert making racist and antisemitic remarks spread on social media in January 2024; police and an FBI-contracted analyst found it was AI-generated with human editing. Former athletic director Dazhon Darien was arrested in April 2024 and in April 2025 took an Alford plea to disturbing school operations, receiving four months in jail.

Impact: The principal was placed on paid administrative leave, district appointees ran the school, and he later resigned; a union representative said the damage to him, his family and the school would be long-lasting.

Who triggered it

Actor: Dazhon Darien, then Pikesville High School athletic director

Attribution: Baltimore County Police linked the sending email to an account tied to Darien and found he used school network access to OpenAI and Bing Chat tools shortly before the clip was sent.

Motive: Retaliation: police say the principal was investigating possible mishandling of school funds by Darien

How it happened

Attack vector: AI voice-cloned recording emailed to teachers and spread on social media

Root cause: Freely available voice-cloning tools and public recordings of the principal's voice

Timeline

  2. Darien arrested at BWI airport; police say the audio was AI-generated
  3. Eiswert sues Baltimore County Public Schools and Darien

Response

Arrest on 25 April 2024 on charges including stalking, theft, retaliation against a witness and disrupting school operations; Alford plea in April 2025 with other charges dropped; Eiswert sued the school district and Darien in January 2025.

Current status: Resolved
